As November 16th rolls around (the date some people celebrate as “Hekate’s Night”), I’ve been getting questions about my plans for it and whether I’ll be sharing a ritual.
The answer is no. Hard pass. Here’s why…
First off, “Hekate’s Night” is a modern invention with zero historical or mythological basis. Trust me, I’ve looked. Other devotees have looked. No one can trace where the fuck this specific date came from or why November 16th became a thing. It just sort of appeared out of nowhere, probably someone pulling heavily from Deipnon practices and slapping a date on it.
Second, I got tired of not having answers, so I did what I always do: I asked Hekate Herself during my daily devotional practice. And She gave me a pretty clear response.
She appeared in a vivid vision, smiled (that knowing smile She does when you’re overthinking something obvious), and said one word: “Nykteria.”
For those who don’t know, that’s one of Her epithets. It means “of the night.”
The message was crystal fucking clear: “Every night is my night.”
That’s it. That’s the whole point. Hekate isn’t confined to November 16th or any other arbitrary date someone decided to celebrate. Her influence and presence aren’t boxed into specific rituals or calendar days. She’s the Mistress of the Night. Every dark hour is Hers. Every night is an opportunity to connect with Her.
So yeah, if you want to celebrate Hekate on November 16th, go for it. If it feels meaningful and sincere to you, then do it. But don’t trick yourself into thinking that’s *the* night to honor Her, or that you’re missing something important if you don’t do a big ritual that day.
Her presence extends far beyond a single date. Every night you light a candle, every prayer you offer, every moment you tend to your practice, you’re honoring Her. The divine Hekate in all Her powerful and mysterious forms is always present, always guiding, always there.
So let’s honor Her not just on some made-up holiday or during the Deipnon, but in every moment of darkness and mystery. Because that’s where She lives. That’s where She walks. And that’s where She meets us.
Every night is Hekate’s night. Hail Hekate.
